What is Surfer's Ear?
Surfer's ear, medically known as exostosis of the external auditory canal, is a condition characterized by the abnormal growth of bone within the ear canal. This growth is typically caused by repeated exposure to cold water and wind, leading to a narrowing of the ear canal which can trap water and debris, increasing the risk of ear infections and hearing loss. Surfer's ear is most common among surfers, swimmers, and others who engage in cold-water sports. Treatment often involves surgical removal of the bony growths to restore normal ear canal function.
What is Swimmer's Ear?
Swimmer's ear, or otitis externa, is an inflammation of the ear canal caused primarily by water remaining in the ear after swimming, creating a moist environment that promotes bacterial growth. The condition often results in pain, itching, redness, and discharge, with severe cases leading to swelling and temporary hearing loss. Swimmer's ear is common among swimmers, divers, and individuals who spend extended periods in the water. Contributing factors include excessive ear cleaning, which can remove protective earwax, and exposure to polluted water. Treatment typically involves ear drops to combat infection and reduce inflammation, as well as keeping the ear dry to prevent recurrence.
